It’s not what you know but who you know?

How many times have your heard those words? For some of us, those words ring true for others it rings of insincerity and abuse. I’d like to take that statement one step further…
It’s not what you know, or who you know, but how you know people. The core of developing a successful career is proven to be “relationships,” all kinds of relationships. From coworkers, customers, vendors, bankers, attorneys, class mates and friends, just to name a few.

So there you are at work again, the same job for over 5 years or 10 or more? Who do you know and how do you know them? When was the last time you had a lunch with a friend outside your circle of work? When was the last time you went to a conference and joined colleagues from the competition for dinner? When was the last time you attended a training program outside of your place of work? When was the last time you connected with any of these acquaintances?

Despite the fast-paced envi-ronment we work in today, developing and nurturing those relationships may make the difference between having a “job” and a successful career
